Kandy SC in hard-fought 32-23 win over Police SC

Kandy Sports Club had to put up a brave effort in order to overcome Police Sports Club by 32 points (four tries, three conversion­s and two penalties) to 23 points (three tries, one conversion and two penalties) in their Inter-club League Rugby Tournament encounter played at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At the breather, Kandy SC led 17-10. Kandy SC full Back, Thilina Wijesinghe put over a 40 metre penalty to open the scoring for the defending champions.

However, Police SC equalised through a penalty from Sachith Silva.

Dhanushka Ranjan then scored his first try for Kandy SC after he dummied his way through and Thilina was accurate with the conversion.

Kandy SC went further ahead through a sweeping three quarter move which ended with Ranjan scoring under the posts.

Thilina added the extra points to take the lead 17-3.

Police SC scored their first try through flanker Vageesha Weerasingh­e. Sachith converted the try to make it 10-17 at half time.after the interval, Sachith missed a penalty but later he converted one to reduce the gap to 13-17.

Police SC went into the lead for the first time in the game when Gihan Silva went over for a try.

But their lead was short lived as Ranjan scored his third try and completed a hattrick of tries as Kandy SC went into the lead 22-18.

Kandy SC scored next through a forwards rush when Yakoob Ali powered his way through with Arshard Jamaldeen adding the extras to take it 29-18.

But Police SC who were not willing to give up, scored again with flanker Weerasingh­e falling over near the right corner flag.

Thereafter, Jamaldeen put over a penalty for Kandy SC.
