NDB uplifts educational standards of children in rural areas

-

With a view to making ‘Responsible Behaviour’ an integral part of the bank, a team from NDB including staff from diverse departments conducted a workshop to uplift the education standards for Children in a remote area in Kegalle.

Welhella Kanishta Vidyala is a mixed school located in Kegalle (Galapita mada Village) consisting of children from Grades 01 to Grade 11 with a student population of 103 in total and 19 teachers. Most of the students attending this school are from low income families as there are fewer opportunities for the villagers due to the area not being suitable for cultivation mainly because the village has been built on top of a big black rock.

Therefore access to resources is minimal. Daily livelihoods of the villagers are restricted due to the poor infrastructure in the village. In order to contribute to this village we decided that we should help the school going children in area, in order to contribute in setting the basics for the younger generation of this village so that they can uplift their knowledge.

Accordingly, the team donated new books and furniture to refurbish the library. They also provided wi-fi solutions and repainted the school as well.

Additionally, NDB also conducted a series of competitions for the school children focusing on “How best to save our environment”.

NDB commenced the ‘Employee Volunteerism’ CSR Initiative in 2009. As a responsible corporate citizen, NDB believes that ‘Community Involvement’ goes beyond core business activities and with an objective of creating value through employee participation, the bank encourages its employees to volunteer their time and effort to give back to the community.

Employee volunteering programmes can allow workers to feel that the work they do is not only contributing to the overall success of the company, but that it is also helping out a charitable cause that is important to them.

Whilst, inculcating responsibility towards the community and environment in all NDB employees, this initiative also motivates them to venture out on their own and implement their own projects.

In 2018, the bank’s employees were divided into 10 teams consisting of staff based at the bank’s head office and 08 regional teams. The Teams are in the process of completing the projects which all come under the umbrella of education, environment or entrepreneurship.

As a responsible corporate citizen, NDB strives to make meaningful contributions to the society through its strategic sustainability initiatives that aim to inspire the sustainable growth of a progressive Sri Lanka.
