The UNF has handed over a motion to suspend the expenditure head of the newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, UNF member and Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Rauff Hakeem told a media briefing yesterday.

He said the motion was handed over to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.

“We have requested that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s secretary should be prevented from spending funds on Mr. Rajapaksa’s behalf,” Mr. Hakeem said and added that this motion would be taken for debate on November 29.

UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake said he together with MPS Navin Dissanayake, Chathura Senaratne, Nalaka Kolonne, Hector Appuharmy and Dr. Kavinda Jayawardene signed the motion.

UNP MP Rajitha Senaratne said this was one of the many steps his party would take to ensure democracy in the country.“we will take more action both in and outside Parliament and these will be made known during the next few days,” he said.

TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran and Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake said their parties would also support the motion.

When asked why the current political crisis is being dragged on, Dr. Senaratne said it was President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Rajapaksa who were responsible for this crisis.“it was Mr.

We will take more action both in and outside Parliament

Sirisena and Mr. Rajapaksa who started this crisis and they should be held answerable for any hardship which people are undergoing as a result,” he said. Responding to a question as to why the opposition was not allowing the government to take up a trust vote, Dr Senaratne said his party had made this suggestion but the government had turned it down.

He said adjourning Parliament till Friday was the only option because the government was never willing to take up a vote to determine which side commands a majority.

When asked whether the UNF was willing to produce affidavits by 113 MPS and show that they had a majority Dr. Senaratne said President had not given them an opportunity to do so.“we will prove we have majority support if we are allowed to do so,” he said.
