3 women, man nabbed with Rs.14 Mn worth jewellery at BIA
Four Sri Lankans including three females were arrested at the Katunayake airport when they were attempting to smuggle gold jewellery valued at Rs.14 million into the country this morning, Customs media spokesman Sunil Jayarathne said.
He said the passengers arrived from Mumbai.
The customs officials who were on duty at the Green Channel detected the jewellery after they went through the scanners, he said.
“The gold jewellery with necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets weighing into 2 kilograms and 540 grams were found hidden in their garments and in their luggage,” Mr Jayarathne said.
Investigations into the case were conducted under the guidance of Additional Director General of Customs Stanley Senarathne and Customs Director M.A. Karunarathne, Deputy Director D.P.M. Goonewardhane and SP Kiriwaththuduwa along with Superintendents of Customs D.W.K. Wijethunga, Gamini Wijethunga, Eric Perera, A.A.D.C. Shanthapriya and Bandula Gajanayake along with Assistant Superintendents Chandana Pushpakumara, Harsha Wijegoonerathne and Daniel.
