RAINS: MOTORISTS WARNED

Hemmathaga­ma-gampola, Talawakele-pundaluoya Roads affected

Motorists along the He math th a ga mag amp ola Road should drive with extra care following an earth slip at Amabalawa, the Traffic Branch of Hemmathaga­ma Police said yesterday. Meanwhile, the Pundaluoya Police said that there was a risk of falling stones near the Mad ak um bur aJ unction on the T al awake le pu nd aluoyaRo ad.

Residents of Ambalawa had observed and informed the Police that a mound of soil had fallen on the side of the road and had covered the double culvert on the Hemmathaga­ma-gampola Road in the Ambalama Division.

“There are more than 12 such places between Hemmathaga­ma and Gampola and there is a risk of landslides due to torrential rains,” the Police said.

Removal of the soil mound is to be done by the road contractor­s but has been halted due to the rains. Traffic Branch of Hemmathaga­ma Police requested drivers to drive vehicles carefully when they drive on this road.

“Due to the huge stones that have fallen onto the road, vehicular traffic has come to a standstill. There is a further risk of falling trees, stones and landslides due to prevailing heavy rains in Central Hills,” they said. Officers of the Road Developmen­t Authority and Pundaluoya Police request the motorists to be careful when driving at the Mad ak um bur aJ unction on the Th ala wake le pu nd aluoyaRo ad. Road constructi­on work commenced in 2015 at a cost of 57 Billion.the road is constructe­d from Mawanella to Hemmathaga­ma and from there up to Gampola.the road from Mawanella to Hemmathaga­ma has been completed and the road from Hemmathaga­ma to Gampola has not been completed as yet.
