Face change in Cricket Selection Committee
Labrooy axed, replaced by Ashantha de Mel
Former National cricketer Ashantha de Mel has been appointed as the Chairman of a fresh National Selection Committee announced yesterday.
The committee also includes Brendon Kuruppu, Hemantha Wickramaratne and Chaminda Mendis.
De Mel was previously Chairman of Selectors in 2012, a committee which Wickramaratne was also a member of.
The appointments were made on the recommendations of the recently appointed Cricket Advisory Committee.
Labrooy was appointed to the role for six months in September 2017, following the resignation of the Sanath Jayasuriya-led committee the previous month, and then given a one-year extension in May this year.
His period as Chairman of Selectors was plagued by criticism over his dual role – as National Selector and International Match Referee – with questions over his ability to carry out both duties concurrently.
