SUNIL SANTHA: COMMEMORAT­ING 103rd BIRTH ANNIVERSAR­Y

A series of events have been organized in the coming days to mark the 103th birth anniversar­y of legendary music composer, vocalist and lyricist the late Sunil Santha who has earned a special place in the annals of Sri Lankan music, largely due to his struggle to create a truly Sri Lankan music identity. The Peradeniya Alumni has organized a musical event on November 27 to coincide with the commemorat­ion titled ‘MY DREAMS’ at the Peradeniya University featuring T. M. Jayaratne, Nalini Ranasinghe, Keerthi Pasqual, Nadeeka Guruge, Indika Upamali, Nelu Adhikari and Rodney Warnakula. Suresh Maliyadda will direct the music. Wasantha Kulatunga has written the script while Pushkara Wanniarach­chi is in charge of the creative management. The annual Sunil Santha lecture will be delivered by Dr Sunil Wijesiriwa­rdana at the Disaster Management Ministry Auditorium, Colombo 7 on December 4 under the theme ‘Concept Frames on Sinhala Music and Sunil Santha’ . Olu Pipeela Wela Lela Denawa, Suwanda Rosa Mal Nela, Handapane, Kokilayang­e Kokila Nade, Ho Ga Rella Nege are a few songs that instantly reminds us of Sunil Santha.
