New People’s Bank Chairperso­n assumes duties

The newly appointed Chairperso­n of People’s Bank, Sujatha Cooray, a senior public servant, assumed duties at the Head office of People’s Bank on November 21.

Cooray is a Class 1 officer of the Sri Lanka Planning Service.

She holds a B.A degree and a B.phil degree from the University of Colombo. She also holds a MA in Developmen­t Economics from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherland­s.

Over thirty years of her public service career, she has functioned as Secretary to the Ministry of Ports & Highways and also held high ranking positions in the Ministry of Finance as Deputy Secretary to the Treasury and Director General of Department of External Resources.

Apart from above, Cooray has served on the directorat­es of several private and state owned Banks, Securities & Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka, Insurance Board, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Tourist Board etc.

She has represente­d the government of Sri Lanka in many internatio­nal forums including annual sessions of World BANK/IMF, Asian Developmen­t Bank (ADB), Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Currently she is a member of National Salaries and Cadre Commission.
