SL can still overcome economic crisis with right strategy: Dr. Godahewa
No economic crisis is permanent and Sri Lanka can always find ways to come out of this crisis with the right strategy, a top official said yesterday.
Former Chairman of the Securities Exchange Commission Dr. Nalaka Godahewa expressed these views while delivering the D. A. Rajapaksa Commemorative Oration at New Town Hall, Colombo under the theme “The need for a people-centric economic development plan.”
He said one must understand that economic management cannot happen in isolation. “It is important for Sri Lanka to think independently while listening to external advice. There are several aspects in the overall national policy that would have an impact on the economy on the long run,” Dr.godahewa said.
He said the aspiration of the common man today is for a people- centric economy. “A government must understand the actual needs of the people. These needs manifest in different ways at different times. Right now, a vast majority of people want a government that can assure peace, happiness and prosperity for its citizens,” he said.
He said the core philosophy in the Mahinda Chinthaaya is woven around the concept of a peoplecentric economy.
“What is required now is to agree on the modifications and the improvements and have a clear set of strategies in place for the full implementation of a people-centric economy. Let is dedicate our selves jointly and sincerely with commitment towards the realization of this national endeavor,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Godahewa said the journey that began with two brothers D. M. Rajapaksa and D. A. Rajapaksa serving the State Council under the British rule, had produced senior government officials, members of parliament, ministers, a Speaker, a Prime Minister and a President over the years and all of them served the country with pure commitment.
