Two-wheeler accidents rise in Panadura

- BY KUSAL CHAMATH

Residents of Panadura expressed concern on the increasing rate of accidents in the area, mainly due to the haphazard riding of motorcyclists.

They pointed out that a fatal accident at Pinwala on the Panadura –Kiriberiya Road was reported this week.

The rider of one motorcycle died on admission to hospital and the other was seriously injured. “In addition, constant minor accidents involving motorcycles and trishaws have occurred. The riders and drivers in the majority of these accidents are young men,” one resident said. “The majority of motorcyclists area young men who are not competent to ride a motorcycle and do not possess a riding licence. Their haphazard riding has endangered the lives of poor pedestrians and other motorcyclists.

“Driving at excessive speed and violation of road safety and traffic regulations by motorcyclists and trishaw drivers is going on unchecked in the by-roads in Panadura area,” they said.

They requested Panadura Police to carry out raids in by-roads to arrest motorcyclists and trishaw drivers violating traffic laws and endangering lives due to haphazard riding.

They stressed the need to deploy a Police officer to control traffic at the Eluvila Junction during rush hours.
