JVP CAMPAIGN TO DEFEAT ARBITRARY STEPS TAKEN BY PREZ

- BY SUNIL THANTHRIARACHCHI

Kalutara District JVP Parliamentarian Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the JVP’S campaign was to defeat the undemocratic and arbitrary steps taken by President Maithripala Sirisena and not to restore power to UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe or to remove Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa from his Prime Ministerial post.

Addressing a meeting of scholars and party supporters at the Garden Beach Hotel in Kalutara he said the country had experienced prorogation and dissolution of parliament, removal and appointment of Prime Ministers on several occasions but they were democratic and constitutional, entirely different from what is going on now.

“Today attempts are being made to strengthen the political parties involved in the tug-a-war through undemocratic means. The gratification offered to a parliamentarian to cross over is about Rs. 500 million. We have received reliable information that machines have been purchased to count the money in fear of those crossing over being paid using counterfeit notes. However, none of our members have been bribed in this manner. The JVP went to court against violating the constitution. The court gave a historic judgment. The President has failed to appoint a Prime Minister under the provisions of the constitution even after the judgment. We are not concerned who should be the Prime Minister. What is important to us is that democracy prevails .
