Dr. Weerasooria’s funeral today
Dr Sena Wickrama Weerasooria, lawyer, senior civil servant, diplomat and academic has passed away on Tuesday (04) after a brief illness.
He was an adviser to late President J.R. Jayewardene and incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena, a member of the University Grants Commission and also functioned as Insurance Ombudsman of Sri Lanka

Dr Weerasooria served as one of the most powerful and influential senior public officials under the Jayewardene regime.
He was the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Plan Implementation, former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand. He was serving as Sri Lanka’s first Insurance Ombudsman at the time of his demise. Dr Weerasooria was educated at Royal College Colombo where he excelled in Classics, winning the Harvard Memorial Prize and the Governor General’s Prize.
He graduated with an LLB (Honours) degree from the University of Ceylon with First Class Honours and was called to the bar as an advocate.
