Dr. Weerasoori­a’s funeral today

Dr Sena Wickrama Weerasoori­a, lawyer, senior civil servant, diplomat and academic has passed away on Tuesday (04) after a brief illness.

He was an adviser to late President J.R. Jayewarden­e and incumbent President Maithripal­a Sirisena, a member of the University Grants Commission and also functioned as Insurance Ombudsman of Sri Lanka

Dr Weerasoori­a served as one of the most powerful and influentia­l senior public officials under the Jayewarden­e regime.

He was the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Plan Implementa­tion, former Sri Lankan High Commission­er to Australia and New Zealand. He was serving as Sri Lanka’s first Insurance Ombudsman at the time of his demise. Dr Weerasoori­a was educated at Royal College Colombo where he excelled in Classics, winning the Harvard Memorial Prize and the Governor General’s Prize.

He graduated with an LLB (Honours) degree from the University of Ceylon with First Class Honours and was called to the bar as an advocate.
