Beruwala heroin haul: Boat owner ar­rested

Po­lice yesterday ar­rested 44-year-old Dulip Sa­man­tha, the owner of the boat, which was al­leged to have been used to trans­fer 231.5 kilo­grams of heroin off the coast of Beruwala.

They said he was a res­i­dent of Beruwala. The sus­pect had at­tempted to es­cape by jump­ing into the Ke­lani River when po­lice per­son­nel were af­ter him.

Po­lice said he had in his possession, Rs.1.5 mn in cash at the time of his ar­rest.

They said the sus­pect is the brother of one of the two sus­pects ar­rested on Wed­nes­day night.

231.5 kilo­grams of heroin val­ued at more than Rs.2,778 mil­lion, the sec­ond largest haul of heroin was seized by the Po­lice Nar­cotic Bureau (PNB) of­fi­cials in the seas off Beruwala on Wed­nes­day night.
