- BY ATULA BANDARA AND DAYARATNE EMBOGAMA

The students of the Rajarata University staged a protest in the Mihintale town condemning the Police action against the demonstration of Inter-university Federation (IUSF) on Tuesday (4) in Colombo

More than 1,000 students of the Rajarata University marched from the University campus to the Mihintale Town, where they staged the protest and held a meeting.

They also set fire to an effigy of President Maithripala Sirisena.

A representative of the General Student Union of the Rajarata University told the media that the students campaigning for their rights and demanding basic facilities were being victimised by the authorities. “A secret plot was being hatched by the education sector authorities to ruin State Education and to privatize tertiary education in the country,” he said.

“Several student movement activists of the Rajarata and the South-eastern Universities have been suspended for more than a year,” he said.

Traffic on the Kandy-jaffna A9 highway had been obstructed for about an hour due to the protest.

The IUSF held the demonstration in Colombo urging President Maithripala Sirisena to intervene and withdraw the suspension of several students in the Rajarata and South-eastern Universities.
