Lance Corporal arrested for harassing WPC

A Lance Corporal of the army, who entered the Kegalle Division Police Station and attempted to take liberties with a Woman Police Constable (WPC) was taken into custody by the Kegalle Police.

The 45-year-old suspect is a resident of Weerambuge­dara in Kurunegala and is attached to the Batalanda Army Camp.

Investigat­ions revealed that he had visited the Police Station about a month ago and met the DIG Kegalle Division introducin­g himself as an Army Major and often frequented the station in civvies.

When questioned about his motive for coming to the police station the suspect had admitted to being married and was living temporaril­y in Parakaduwa in Eheliyagod­a and that his wife was back home in Kurunegala.

During further investigat­ions it transpired that the WPC had been in love with the suspect for several years and had rejected his advances after getting to know that he was married.

The suspect was produced before Kegalle Magistrate Chamara Wickremesi­nghe and remanded till December 10.

HQI Kegalle Police CI Athula Abeyratne and Sergeant 3022 Bandara of the Women and Children’s Bureau are conducting further investigat­ions.
