Chinese couple nabbed with Rs. 3.4 mn worth of fags
Two Chinese passengers, a man and a woman, were arrested while attempting to smuggle in cigarettes valued at Rs. 3.4 million from the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake last night, the Customs Department said.
Customs Spokesman, Deputy Director Sunil Jayaratne said the two suspects were apprehended with 63,600 sticks (318 cartons) of cigarettes valued at Rs. 3,498,000.
The suspects were arrived from Honkong, China and were arrested by customs officials while entering through the green (nothing to declare) entrance of the BIA, he said.
Investigations were carried out under the guidance of Additional Director General of Customs Stanley Senarathne and Airport Customs Director M.A Karunaratne by Deputy Director E.M.J Navaratne and Customs Superintendents M.M.P Rohana, D. Ajith, R.K.M Dayananda along with Assistant Superintendents T.N.D.T Samaranayake, Aruna Samarasinghe Y.B.L Indika and J.G Pathirana.
