WPC narrowly escapes grenade explosion

Anuradhapu­ra Police said that a hand grenade had been hurled yesterday (9) at the Police Quarters Complex where a Woman Police Constable, named Dilhani Rasika Premarathn­a (36) and her daughter were living.

Police said further that she was sleeping with her two-year-old daughter but they escaped unhurt due to the bomb explosion because they were asleep under a mosquito net. According to the police, a suspect had thrown this grenade through the wind hole, the inmates were unhurt as the grenade had only struck the mosquito nets and fallen on the ground and the pin of the grenade had been found close to the window.

The Woman Police Constable has informed the police that she suspected her husband of committing this act and that he was living separately for about 1 ½ years

Due to the explosion of the grenade, windows, doors and the furniture have been destroyed.

A case has allegedly been filed in the court for their divorce. He is said to be a sergeant major of the Sri Lanka Army and he had often posed death threats at her. She had made complaints to the Anuradhapu­ra Police and Military Police regarding these threats.

In the mean time, Investigat­ions are being made to arrest the Sergeant Major by the officers of the Crime Investigat­ion Unit with the direction of Anuradhapu­ra Division SP Thilina Hewapathir­ana.
