Police thrash Air Force to win big at home

Police Sports Club recorded their first win this season when they beat Air Force Sports Club 28-19 in their Dialog Interclub League Rugby Tournament fixture played at the Police Park yesterday.

The Cops collected their points through one goal, three tries and two penalties while the Airmen managed only one goal and four penalties. The half time scores read 13-9 in favour of the hosts.

The home side opened scoring when Sachith Silva slotted in a penalty in the fourth minute.

Carrying on with the early momentum, Police SC struck hard and were rewarded when second row forward Romesh Acharige went over the line five minutes later to make the scores 8-0.

Air Force SC reduced the deficit when Charith Senevirath­ne converted two back-to-back penalties, amending the scores to 6-8.

Sujan Kodituwakk­u scored the hosts’ second try when he got past the Air Force SC defence before touching down but the easy conversion was wasted.

Senevirath­ne’s pin-point penalty kick minutes later ensured a reduction of Police SC’S lead as the scores were

amended to 9-13 at half time.

Air Force SC came back into the game after the interval when second row forward Thilina Bandara collected the ball off a rolling maul and sprang over the line to touchdown. The extras were added, making the scores 16-13.

Police SC pulled off a try 10 minutes later when Kodituwakk­u planted his second try of the match following a series of quick passes close to the try line.

Senevirath­ne put over his fourth penalty minutes later when he bisected

the poles with ease, making the scores read 18-19.

The home side kept attacking and they managed to get one back when Rasith Silva went over the line.

Janith Chandimal added the extras, amending the scores to 25-19.

Yohan Peiris put the icing on the cake when he converted a penalty on the verge of full time which sealed a 28-19 victory for Police SC.
