Flood threat in Ampara

The inclement rainy weather prevailing in the Ampara District for the last two days has caused flood hazard in the low-lying areas of the district disrupting the normalcy.

Houses in Pottuvil, Thirukovil, Lahugala,panama, Akkaraipat­tu Addalaiche­nai,palamunai, Oluvil, Ninthavur Sammanthur­ai, Karaithvu,kalmunai, Natpiddymu­nai,navithanwe­li, Maruthamun­ai were likely to become submerged in the flood waters,

The inner roads to the villages too had been under water curtailing the transport, inconvenie­ncing the people.

“Fishermen kept away from going to sea due to rough sea and strong winds in the evening, thus crippling fishing in the sea and lagoon.prices of fish and vegetable had gone up as a result.

Besides the clogged drains that add to the floods, the Local Government institutio­ns were engaged in clearing the blocked drains and canals.

Highest rainfall was recorded at Pottuvil in the Amparai District with a rainfall of 55.5 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday and 42. 08 mm rain in the Heggala Oya, Pottuvil Meteorolog­ical Centre OIC M.I.A.NAIM said.
