Writing ‘Happy Birthday’ in Sinhala?

- COURTESY

There are people who love to surprise birthday boys or girls. Some are really capable of doing it in a discreet manner. The birthday of a young actress fell recently and one of her friends wanted to give her a surprise. He knew what the girl loved to have for dinner. So, he called that restaurant and ordered a large portion asking that it be delivered to her address. Now, this guy was impatiently waiting for the ‘thank you’ call from the birthday girl, but nothing was forthcoming. Then he called the restaurant and asked for the mobile phone number of the delivery guy who had been on his way to the girl’s residence. “Malli can you do me a favour? Please write ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ on that box before delivering it to her…”, he told the delivery guy. “I am sorry sir, I can’t write in English. Is it ok if I write ‘Happy Birthday’ in Sinhala?,” the guy had asked.
