MKMDP can promote a corruption-free society: Prez

Says political parties and their leaders corrupt to the core

- BY SANDUN A JAYASEKERA

Political parties and their leaders are corrupt to the core and therefore the people must adapt a new economic, social and political culture devoid of these elements, President Maithripala Sirisena said on Tuesday.

Said this when vesting the new Laggala Town with the people at a ceremony on Tuesday Paid tribute to the labourers, technicians, engineers and politicians who made this a reality

He said the Moragahakanda-kalu Ganga Multipurpose Development Project (MKMDP) can play a big role in promoting a society free of corruption, poverty and blessed with happiness, dignity and confidence.

He told a public rally near the new Laggala Town that he was a person who was born and raised in the civilization built under the Parakrama Samudraya.

“I was raised in Rajarata in a society that used the mamoty and hatchet. It was a major cultural and social set up that wielded huge power.today,we are in a cultural, social and attitudinal transition created by the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Programme (AMDP) that consists of five major reservoirs. The Moragahakanda-kalu Ganga Multipurpose Development Project will be the final programme under the MKMDP,” the President said.

He paid tribute to the labourers, technicians, engineers and politicians who made the MKMDP a reality, like the late Dudley Senanayaka, C.P.DE Silva, Gamini Dissanayaka and Gamini Atukorale. “I have not met CP but met all other political leaders. I can remember the Rajarata

people of my father’s generation going to meet Mr. Silva with their grievances in petitions.the MKMDP and the Moragahakanda-kalu Ganga Development Projects are a great result of sacrifices of many engineers, formen, technicians and other workers. I can remember how the senior engineer, late A.N.S. Kulasinha took me to the thick jungle while I was serving as a deputy minister of Mahaweli Development and showed me where the reservoirs, tanks, bunds, power stations, tunnels and dams would be built once the Moragahakanda – Kaluganga development project was launched.that is why I named the Moragahakanda reservoir as the A.n.s.kulasinha Reservoir in his honour,” the President said. It has a capacity of 400,000 acre feet of water.
