Selling parts of boom truck: Four persons remanded

Ratnapura Additional Magistrate D. de S. Weerawarde­na ordered the four suspects, including two soldiers, to be remanded till January 22 after they were arrested on suspicion of allegedly stealing and taking apart a boom truck that had parked near a timber mill. He gave this order last Friday (11).

A boom truck that had been used for loading timber onto a truck had been stolen from a timber mill located in Yakdehiwat­ta in Nivithigal­a last Monday (7). According to a complaint made to Nivithigal­a Police regarding this theft on Tuesday (8), four suspects who came in a trishaw were seen driving this truck. This was caught by CCTV footage from a building nearby. The key of the truck had been in the ignition when it was robbed.

The police were informed that the trishaw in which the suspects came was from the Koswetiya area and they had been seen in the area close several hours before the theft occurred.

Producing the suspects in court, police said that the engine, chassis and other parts had been discovered in the Udawalawa area while they were being transporte­d for sale when they were checking a yellow-coloured truck loaded with iron.

Police informed the court that another part of the boom truck had been found at a house in the Udawalawe area.

At the request of the police, the Magistrate ordered the suspects to be remanded till January 22. The police team including Nivithigal­a Police OIC IP Punchihewa are conducting further investigat­ions.
