For the love of Sri Lanka…

Can someone explain as to why the present government is keen on introducing a ‘New Constitution to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka?

Did the people of this country give a mandate at the last general election to those governing the country, at present to introduce a new constitution? If not, does it not amount to a betrayal of the people and an illegal act?
