Will fight for the rights of all people: MR

EARLIER ONLY THE CONCERNS OF A PARTICULAR GROUP WERE ADDRESSED

- BY SHEAIN FERNANDOPULLE

The Opposition Leader’s office previously represented a particular group of people and a region, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

He said this when he assumed duties at his office at No:30, Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo 7.“We were on several occasions prevented from having a proper opposition in parliament. However, believe that it was a great victory for us to be officially recognised as the main opposition in Parliament after overcoming several obstacles,” Mr. Rajapaksa said.“the opposition party led by R. Sampanthan was not playing its proper role as the opposition.they only addressed the issues and the concerns faced by a group of people.”

He said the new opposition was ready to work for people who live in all parts of the country irrespective of their race and ethnicity.

“Democracy is gradually fading away and the government has failed to address the burning issues of the country,” Mr. Rajapaksa said.“we urge the government to address the issues that actually concern the people especially the issue of the ‘Sena’ caterpillar which has spread to every part of the country hindering our cultivators.”
