CASH REWARDS FOR POLICE OFFICERS AND INFORMANTS

SPECIAL OPERATION BEGAN ON JANUARY 1 TO MARCH 31 MORE FIREARMS STILL IN THE COUNTRY

At the end of a three-month-long operation, the Police Department will award cash prizes to police personnel who successful­ly carry out search and seize operations and to those who provide informatio­n about illegal firearms, Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.

He said the special operation was launched on the orders of Police Chief Pujith Jayasundar­a, who has also directed the Special Anti-narcotic Drive (SAND) to continue.the operation to seize illegal firearms in the country began on January 1 and will end on March 31. SP Gunasekara said though the police had seized a large quantity of illegal firearms in the recent past, there were more illegal firearms circulatin­g in the country.

The awards will be as follows: A police officer who arrests a suspect with a T-56 rifle will receive a cash reward of Rs.50,000 and the informant Rs.20,000 while a police officers who seizes a weapon will receive Rs10,000 and the informant, Rs.5,000.

The rest of the categories are as follows: Rs.40,000 for seizing a repeater weapon and Rs.15,000 to an informant. Rs.10,000 for a weapon seized and Rs.5,000 to an informant.

Rs.20,000 for a foreign-made shotgun and Rs.10,000 as a personal reward. Rs.5,000 to a police officer and Rs.3,000 to an informant.

Rs.30,000 to a police officer who arrests a suspect with a pistol and Rs.15,000 to the informant. Rs.10,000 to a police officer for seizing a weapon and Rs.5,000 to the informant. Rs.20,000 will be given away to a police officer who arrests a suspect with a revolver and Rs.10,000 to the informant. Rs.5,000 to a police officer seizing a weapon and Rs.3,000 to the informant.

Rs.60,000 to a police officer who arrests a person with a machine gun manufactur­ed in a foreign country and Rs.25,000 to the informant. Rs.15,000 to a police officer for a weapon and Rs.7,500 to the informant. Rs.20,000 to a police officer who arrests a suspect with a weapon and Rs.10,000 to the informant. Rs.5,000 to a police officer without a suspect and Rs.3,000 to the informant.

Rs.10,000 to a police officer who arrests a suspect with an any locally manufactur­ed weapon and Rs.5,000 to the informant and Rs.5,000 to a police officer without a suspect and Rs.3,000 to the informant.
