Sinhapura Tank left to the mercy of shrub jungle

- BY K. G. KARUNARATNE

The Sinhapura Tank, located in the Welikanda Division in Mahaweli ‘B” Zone in Polonnaruwa, provides irrigation facilities to more than 500 acres of paddy for the Yala and Maha seasons in the past.

The tank has been left to the mercy of the shrub jungle and aquatic plants for a long time much to the dismay of farmers.

They pointed out that the capacity of the tank had reduced greatly due to the silt that had filled into it and that it ran dry within weeks during the drought. Residents of the area said they depended on the tank for water for bathing and washing and recreation activities including fishing and boating in the past. Meanwhile Residential Manager of the Mahaweli “B” Zone Thushara Danthanarayana said that the Sinhapura Tank would be restored under the crash programme implemented on the instructions of the President .
