GSLF says no to constitutional reforms

- BY LAHIRU POTHMULLA

The Global Sri Lankan Forum (GSLF) yesterday said the expert report on constitutional-making process, which was presented in parliament recently, was an attempt to divide Sri Lanka into nine countries.

In a statement, the organisation said the expert report has said Sri Lanka was ‘unitary’ in Sinhalese but ‘united’ in Tamil.“it has also proposed to appoint a set of secondary MPS through provincial governments. To practically implement the ‘united’ or ‘federal’ characteristics in this proposal police powers will be vested in a provincial police commission which is excluded from the central government. Fiscal management powers will also be given to the periphery making them independent,” the GSLF said.

It said proposed amendments are an attempt to turn the country into a federal state. “therefore, we urge everyone to defeat this bogus document. We request all Sri Lankans to come forward irrespective of their differences to defeat this foreign parliament coup,” it said.
