25 Percent Public servants corrupt Neville Guruge

Member of the Commission to Investigat­e Allegation­s of Bribery or Corruption, Neville Guruge said 25 percent of the 1.5 million public servants were corrupt and that their malpractic­es were going on unchecked due to the lethargic attitude of the other 75 percent who only boast about their honesty.

He said that the individual­s who were fortunate to hold senior positions in the state sector and the private sector establishm­ents resort to corrupt activities and end up in misfortune

Addressing a seminar at the Gampaha Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya to create awareness among the principals and teachers on the endeavour to create a just society, he said only the countries that eradicated corruption could achieve their developmen­t targets. He pointed out that the principals and teachers of schools had a major role to play in originatin­g a just society from schools by inculcatin­g social values and avoiding corruption. He said that the individual­s who were fortunate to hold senior positions in the state sector and the private sector establishm­ents resort to corrupt activities and end up in misfortune.

Commenting on the progress of the programme he said that it was already underway in several schools in the Southern Province but the leading schools have shown a poor response.

Asst Directors of the Commission, Attorneys-at-law Dushmanthi Rajapakse and Manodhi Hewawasam, Investigat­ion Officer SI U.P. Wickramara­chchi, Zonal Director of Education K.G. Sirima, Divisional Director of Education Priyanthi Nanayakkar­a, Director Planning Anura Kumara, Principal of the school Gayani Wathsala addressed the seminar.
