Few natural phenomena are as captivating as the northern lights; a naturally occurring display of colourful dancing lights in the night sky, also known as ‘Aurora Borealis’.

Witnessing the northern lights in person is a dream shared by many. That is why Nations Trust Bank (NTB) American Express (Amex) is giving cardholders an exclusive chance to make that dream a reality.

Cardholders simply need to use their cards to fuel up for Rs.2,500 or more at any fuel station islandwide to be entered into a draw to win a free tour to Iceland to see the northern lights. The offer is valid from February 1 to April 30, 2019, and each usage for fuel of Rs.2,500 or multiples thereof earns cardholders additional entries into the draw, increasing their chances of winning.

The tour package, courtesy of Exodus Travels, will give the winner and their travel companion a chance to see the northern lights amidst the breath-taking landscapes of Iceland. The package also includes a tour of Iceland’s Golden Circle which includes visits to Thingvellir National Park, Gulfoss Waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area; all of which are fantastic natural landscapes encompassing lava fields, lakes, beautiful scenery and geysers.

The tour also includes an opportunity to walk on a glacier and witness the amazing glacial lagoon. The travel period for the package is from December 2019 to April 2020 for four nights and includes airfare for two, accommodation, breakfast, transportation, listed activities and a tour guide courtesy of NKAR Travels and Tours and Nations Trust Bank.

Speaking about the programme, Nations Trust Bank Cards Head Niluka Gunatilake said: “The ‘pump fuel and win campaign’ is one of our longest running series of on-going loyalty rewards programmes. Through campaigns such as this we aim to reward our cardholders for their loyalty while also surprising and delighting them. The passion to travel and see the world is one that is shared by our cardholders. Therefore, we feel that this amazing tour package to see one of nature’s most spectacular displays of beauty will provide the winner with memories that will last a lifetime and will be truly appreciated.”

NKAR Travels and Tours Chief Operating Officer Arjun Vivekanandan said: “As the local and international representative of Exodus Holidays, we are proud to partner with Nations Trust Bank for the second time in this successful campaign. Exodus Holidays is all about Experiential Travel and valuing the experiences you actually have over what you are told you should be doing by someone else. We are all different, we all enjoy different things and our travel should reflect that and leave us with memories we can cherish.”

The northern lights are the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere and charged particles released from the Sun. The colour variations are caused by the different types of gas particles involved in the collisions. These lights occur near the north and south poles. Indigenous peoples have ascribed various spiritual meanings to the magic of the northern lights and many believe they are the spirits of ancestors or other benevolent entities.
