SLC READY TO FIELD TEAM FOR SAG - ASHLEY

- BY SUSILPREMALAL

With cricket being a possible addition to this year’s edition of the South Asian Games, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said it was prepared to accommodate a team if requested. “We are ready to field a squad (men and women) for the South Asian Games 2019 in Kathmandu, Nepal, coming September or October,” Ashley De Silva, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SLC, said.

“The National Olympic Committee or the Ministry of Sports have not informed us, officially, whether a cricket team will be accommodated. As soon as were made aware of it, we will make arrangements to include a cricket team.”

This is the second time that cricket has been included in the South Asian Games.

Cricket was included in the 2010 Dhaka, SAG as a T20 Men’s Tournament where Sri Lanka was the runners-up with Bangladesh emerging as the champions. Six countries participated in the competition.

In 2014 Incheon, Asian Games cricket (men and women) were included where Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan to win the men’s Gold.

In the women’s competition Sri Lanka bagged the Bronze. The Gold was won by Pakistan and Bangladesh won the Silver.

“There is no necessity to target cricket especially for the SAG. We have pool training for juniors and seniors almost daily. Once the dates and events are known we can field the team,” De Silva pointed out.

It is learnt that, except for Bhutan, the other seven countries will participate in cricket.
