Biotechnology is touted to be one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. Expected to contribute greatly to Malaysia’s GDP by the year 2020, biotechnology indeed has and will continue to impact our daily lives.

This growing industry has seen many developments in the past few years and is apt for those wishing to dive deep into the world of genetics and biochemistry. The Malaysian Government recognises biotechnology as one of the key strategic drivers to propel the country’s social and economic development in pursuit of the status of a developed nation. With the launch of the National Biotechnology Policy (NBP) in 2005 focussing primarily on three economic sectors namely - agriculture, healthcare and industrial manufacturing, biopharmaceuticals and biogenetics became a new frontier for major corporations in this field.

Students wishing to pursue a career in biotechnology need not venture far as Manipal International University (MIU)’S courses in Biotechnology are designed to enable graduates to have a solid understanding of science and technology together with added entrepreneurial skills. This composition of skills will definitely be invaluable to future employers and layout a platform for budding biotechnology entrepreneurs of the future.

The Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) (Hons) at Manipal International University, Malaysia provides an overview of the biotechnology industry and common techniques used in R&D. Graduates are trained to fuse their technical expertise with a keen understanding of this fast-paced industry.

We at MIU believe that it is imperative for each student to go beyond the corridors of the lecture halls and studies. Our main aim is to prepare the students well when embarking on their career. With our strong partnerships and business connections, students are given the opportunity to learn while they study via the industry internships that are provided. Through this programme, each student is given the chance to put knowledge gained into the reallife working environment of the industry. With thirteen global academic partners, students can also opt for credit transfer programmes with participating universities.

Manipal International University degrees are approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Ministry of Higher Education. MIU is also a partner for the Industry Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and has accredited industry partners like Biocon and Stempeutics. MIU is registered as South-east Asia’s first “green” university, in compliance with the US Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum green building index.

Spread over 142 acres (574,653sq m) in the university town of Nilai, MIU’S lush green campus offers an academic environment designed to bring out the best in its students. Students at MIU are always encouraged to take part in different sporting activities. A sports complex, located just 1km from the MIU campus provides a gymnasium, badminton court, bowling alley and a karaoke centre. Upon completion of their initial years, students have the flexibility to further their studies in the country of their choice as the twinning programme at MIU allows students to complete their degree programmes overseas.

MIU is a member of the Manipal Global Education Group and a full-fledged Malaysian University offering multidisciplinary programmes with focus in the fields of Science, Engineering and Management and Business. The Manipal Education Group has been responsible for producing some of the brightest minds in Asia for the past 60 years.
