Garbage Recycling Centre opened in Ratnapura
The output of about eight tons of compost manure per day would bring an annual income of Rs.5 million to the Ratnapura Municipal Council
The Garbage Recycling Centre in Kanadola in Ratnapura was declared open yesterday by Dhamma Dissanayake, Governor Sabaragamuwa Province. The project costing Rs.57 million funded by the central government was commissioned particularly to prevent the pollution of Kalu Ganga from Ratnapura to Kalutara with garbage and waste water.
A senior official of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council said more than 40 tons of solid waste and about 30,000 litres sewage collected a day from Ratnapura municipal area and Nivithigala Pradeshiya Sabha area would be recycled. He said the output of about eight tons of compost manure per day would bring an annual income of Rs.5 million to the Ratnapura Municipal Council. The official said dumping of garbage in Kanadola area had resulted in a serious of environmental issues including the pollution of Kaluganga.
Chief Secretary, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council D. M. Malini, Provincial Commissioner of Local Government A. S. J. Godellawatta, Ratnapura Mayor Tyronne Attanayake were present at the occasion.
