LIVE WITHIN OUR MEANS

- Eksith Fernando

While race and religion may to some degree separate our people, what divides us more is the poverty and wealth of our people.there is such a huge gap between the rich and poor in our country. This disparity between the rich and the poor is a real barrier in establishing peace. With so much need around us, both in our rural areas and cities, it is indeed sad to see the way some people live and celebrate without any concern for the poor.

Watching the National Day celebrations on TV, one couldn’t help but feel that this was a celebration of the very rich minority in our nation, and did not involve the majority of our people. What a colossal sum of money would have been spent on this celebration! Could we not have had a simpler celebration – a celebration within our means. Could we not have had some simple celebrations also, in many parts of the country and given an opportunity for our rural people to also participate.there is a need to live within our means.this is something we have never learnt to do. One wonders whether our political leaders cannot see the poverty and needy around us.

The current efforts being made to form a non-existent National govt. raises many questions, when we are struggling ‘to make ends meet’as a nation.the people can’t be fooled all the time.this is merely to give many more MP’S positions and perks to make them ‘yes’ men who will support you as elections draw closer. Utterly disgraceful Mr. PM!
