Elevator Horrors

- Monte Holsinger

I was struck by irony of Ravi Karunananayaka’s proposal to introduce a mechanism to register all elevators, just because some MP’S were trapped in the parliament elevator.

Obviously Wimal Weerawansa’s horror at the thought of death by suffocation echoed by Bandula et al, galvanised the house to serious debate superseding other State matters, even to the extent of initiating prompt action to safeguard the ‘precious lives’ of our politicos, lest more perish in similar fashion, which would indubitably be, at least in their minds, an irreparable loss to the country!

Quite on the contrary, the death of a 24 year old youth in an elevator failure on December 29, 2018, in Colombo, obviously did not warrant any such measures to control elevator maintenance in the country and reduce the risk of more people dying in elevators.

Ergo, we can safely reinforce our own impressions that parliamentarians always feel their own lives are of much greater value than those of the general public.
