Having faced backlash over possible health concerns during the last few years, Nestle Lanka’s flagship Maggi brand has been picked as the company’s key product for 2019 to reassure product safety and nutritional values.

At a recent press conference held at Nestle Lanka’s Kurunegala production facility where the company facilitated local journalists with the opportunity to first-hand witness the strict production procedures of their Maggi products, it was revealed that Maggi products go through a hefty 300 quality checks for ingredients, production and packaging, and 220 quality checks on ingredients.

As the issue faced in India regarding excess amounts of chemicals said to have found in the product was resolved, in Sri Lanka, the product suffered due to the negative public perception on monosodium glutamate (MSG).

This was addressed by Nestle in 2016, and following its consumer demands, the company announced that their Maggie products were free of any traces of lead or MSG.

Further speaking on this, Nestle Lanka Food Vice President Priyadarshinie Karunaratne stressed that all the ingredients for Maggi products are sourced locally and undergo rigorous quality checks.

“In this day and age the budding generation is always keen to know what ingredients and nutritional values are present in the products they consume. It is no different when it comes to figuring out what a sachet packet inside a Maggi noodles pack hold,” Karunaratne said.

She said that natural spices and herbs which can be found in anyone’s home such as coriander, cardamom, turmeric, cumin, black pepper, nutmeg, fenugreek, aniseed, chilli, garlic, ginger, rampe and curry leaves are used as well as some other agents since the product is manufactured in a factory.

She assured that all these ingredients are used in accordance with the local and international food regulations.

Meanwhile, Nestle Lanka Managing Director Fabrice Cavallin, having been involved with local operations for about a month, said that the company has taken it upon itself to clearly convey the nutritional facts and consumption suggestions.

“This is something we do; we give full visibility to our nutritional facts on the ingredients and nutritional values of our products. We also give a clear indication on portion guidance,” he said.

“Maggi has a tremendous equity in Sri Lanka and has always been consumercentric. We want to uphold the trust our consumers have placed in the brand for generations, and are proud to empower customers to learn more about how their favourite noodles are made.”
