BISHOP'S COLLEGE ORATION

-

The distinguished orator of the oration in honour of the Sisters of St Margarets, the Founders of Bishop's

College this year, was a distinguished past pupil, Nimalka Fernando.

She was a past Head Girl and is one that our Alma Mater can truly be proud of. Nimalka has been a courageous, doughty fighter against injustice of any kind , a staunch defender of democracy, freedom and was one of those who fearlessly protested during the former regime, even going to Geneva to protest against injustice.. She spoke of her days at Bishop's College, the principles instilled in her by the Sisters of St Margaret, related anecdotes from her school days and her hopes for reconciliation. As a Bishopian, I am very proud of her and also proud of the English spoken by every Bishopian who spoke that day, as MC, in the welcome speech, introduction of the Speaker and the vote of thanks. Impeccable English in speech and writing has always been our pride. The Bishop of Colombo, Bishop Dilo was present with his wife, the Prinicpal, Shamila Gunatilleke, Dr Philine Peiris, Patron of

the PPA, Dr Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu, Dr Narme Wickremesinghe and Mano Ramanathan

were among those present. The organisers must be congratulated on the success of the event. Bishop's College has produced our first Lady Senator, the late Lady Adeline Molamure,

our first Executive President, the late J. R.

Jayewardene, and five times Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

An excellent record of service to the country.
