IP arrested by CID over abduction

A Police Inspector attached to the Southern Province Police Special Investigat­ion Unit was arrested by the CID On Monday over the abduction of two businessme­n in Rathgama.

IP Kapila Nishantha de Silva was arrested at the Galle SP’S office after obtaining statements. The arrested IP was to be produced before the Galle Magistrate after presenting him before the Judicial Medical officer of the Karapitiya hospital.

The statements had been taken from several police officers of the Crime Investigat­ion Unit that was under the Southern Province Senior Deputy SP , the wives of the two persons who disappeare­d and a mother of one person. A top police officer of a police group which investigat­ed this incident said that another cab is scheduled to be taken into custody in addition to the van that had been taken into custody.

Investigat­ions have revealed that the arrested IP had asked for the van used for kidnapping and it was taken on the pretext of getting medical treatment for his mother. After that a bogus number plate had been fixed according to investigat­ions.

The cab that is scheduled to be taken into custody belonged to the Matara Special Crime Investigat­ions Unit. The two persons who had been taken in the van had later been transferre­d to the cab according to informatio­n revealed. It has also been revealed that the D.V.R part of the CCTV camera of the van owner’s house had been removed.

The two persons who had been kidnapped and later gone missing were Rasik Chinthaka and Asela Manjula Kumara .

The inmates of their house said that these two persons had been kidnapped in a van on January 23, morning by a group who had been dressed in uniforms similar to those of the Police.

The IGP handed over the probe to the Criminal Investigat­ions Department and it is scheduled to obtain more statements from a group of police officers.

As the CID began investigat­ions into the incident, Southern Province senior DIG had been transferre­d to the Colombo Field Task Force Headquarte­rs with immediate effect.
