EDUCATION SYSTEM SHOULD BE HIGH TECH: DR KOHONNA

- BY M.W. SOMARATNE

Former Sri Lankan Representative in the UNO Dr. Palitha Kohonna said the present economic situation would not augur well for the future and that it should be streamlined by adopting modern technology.

Addressing the prefects’ investiture ceremony of Matale International School he said he had put forward former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s proposals to declare a Youth Technology Skill Day to the UNO and it was implemented in 193 countries. He was the chief guest at the ceremony.

“Youth Technology Skill is an integral part of economic development. July 15 has been declared the Youth Technology Skill Day. This had given a new impetus to Youth Technology Skills in several countries. Youth unrest could be eliminated if young men and women were provided with vocational training based on modern technology to empower them to render a service to the country. They can either depend on self-employment or employment abroad. Graduates passing out from universities will have job opportunities awaiting them. No Government since independence had been able to resolve the unemployment problem,” he said He said that the present system of education should be changed and the economy’s forward march should be based on modern technology.
