A peep into Sri Lanka's history

- Story and Illustration by Sajith Bandara

After escaping from the clutches of Princess Chitra‛s brothers, the palace aide Punna managed to hand over little Prince Pandukabhaya to the herdsman‛s home in Doramadalawa.

Having explained all particulars about the little prince, Punna left the Doramadalawa village requesting the family to take good care of Prince Pandukabhaya.

The herdsman‛s family brought up the prince making people believe it was their own son but under strict surveillance.

A few years passed by in this manner.

Meanwhile, one day a letter written by Princess Chitra to the herdsman‛s family got into the hands of her brothers, due to a slip by the palace employee.

The brothers thus came to know that Princess Chitra had given birth to a baby boy who was now being discreetly brought up in the Doramadalawa village

The terrified brothers began to question Princess Chitra and her daughter about the whereabouts of the prince.

Prince Abhaya, the eldest brother of Chitra however helped smoothen out this situation.

The frightened Princess Chitra revealed the whole story to Prince Abhaya and pleaded with him to ensure the safety of her son.
