Prez has no intention of giving Law and Order post to SF: Dayasiri

- BY SANDUN A JAYASEKERA

President Maithripala Sirisena has no intention whatsoever of appointing Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as the Minister of Law and Order just because the UNP wants it, General Secretary and former Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said yesterday.

President Sirisena has been successful in combating the spread of drugs and narcotics and bringing down crime in the country in the last four months since he took over the Law and Order Ministry

He further added that the SLFP was also against giving the Law and Order Ministry to the UNP as President Sirisena was doing an excellant job as Minister Law and Order.

Mr. Jayasekara told reporters that when a UNP minister was in charge of the Law and Order Ministry for four years nothing was done to curtail or control Muslim extremism, underworld activities, drugs

and narcotics or bring down crime.

“President Sirisena has been successful in combating the spread of drugs and narcotics and bringing down crime in the country in the last four months since he took over the Law and Order Ministry. There is a school of thought that the Easter Sunday attack had been expedited by Muslim fundamentalists as a response to the raids and the detection of weapons, drugs and narcotics in the last few months. If that is the case, the President’s actions have prevented a larger carnage because according to the intelligence reports the extremists had initially intended to set off 21 explosions on a single day all over the country. Therefore, I don’t see any justifiable reason as to why we should offer the Law and Order Minister’s post to FM Sarath Fonseka,” Mr. Jayasekara said.
