Hemas Hospitals, the first and only hospital chain in Sri Lanka to have been accredited from the Australian Council on Health Standards (ACHSI), announced the launch of the Hemas Hospital Wellness Centre, a state-of-the-art new primary healthcare facility designed to diagnose and treat non-communicable diseases (NCDS).

Focusing on four important segments of healthcare: Women’s wellness, men’s wellness, health education and non-communicable diseases, the wellness centre will provide a range of primary healthcare services such as a systematic check for diseases as well as counselling, clinics for NCDS as well as programmes for smoking and alcohol cessation.

Offering a wide range of services, the Hemas Hospital Wellness Centre will focus on management of medical conditions like diabetes and hypertension in order to ensure patients work towards a healthier lifestyle.

“Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes are the leading cause of death with an estimated 425 million affected globally and account for approximately 75 percent of deaths in Sri Lanka. A healthy lifestyle is the only path to successfully managing these conditions, but unfortunately many patients don’t

have the necessary knowledge to follow through or struggle to motivate themselves towards this goal,” Hemas Hospital Wellness Centre and Health Educator In-charge Dr. Kaushalya Perera said.

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent NCDS in Sri Lanka, with one in twelve adults suffering from the disease. While a genetic pre-disposition to diabetes is a major factor, ultimately, diabetes is a condition that mainly arises through an unhealthy lifestyle. The good news is that careful management of diet, weight and regular exercise can prevent - and in cases of early diagnosis can even reverse - the condition, ensuring enjoy a better quality of life.

“By providing convenient access, guidance and constant motivation - in the form of regular monitoring, followup consultations and tests managed out of our wellness centre - we are able to better engage with patients. Coupled with regular awareness programmes conducted by leading specialists, we hope to educate patients on the latest advancements in treatment and ensure that they lead long, happy, and healthy lives,” Dr. Kaushalya Perera said.

The new Hemas Hospital Wellness Centre is therefore primarily focused on preventive care and integrated management of diseases and medical conditions - from diagnostics and comprehensive testing to directing patients to the relevant specialists after diagnosis. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, well trained medical officers will lay out a treatment plan and guide patients through the treatment process and ensure medical conditions are managed, in the case of non-communicable diseases, through constant follow ups.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art database, patients will be monitored constantly with the wellness centre going the extra mile to ensure patients follow through with appointments and checkups through reminders over the phone and SMS messages.

“We believe in providing our patients with easy access to affordable healthcare solutions. With this in mind, the wellness centre, the focal point for a patient’s preventive care or management of medical conditions that have been diagnosed, will bring together various disciplines under one roof for the convenience of our patients,” Dr. Kaushalya Perera said.

Lead by renowned Endocrinologist Dr. Manilka Sumanathilake, the wellness centre provides comprehensive diabetic treatment solutions for patients.
