Accused acquitted after 13 years of trial

An accused in an explosive retention case was acquitted by the Colombo High Court after thirteen years of trial.

The accused R.D. Dharmadasa was acquitted by Colombo High Court Judge Pradeep Hettiarach­chi being observing that the prosecutio­n had not proven the case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

During the hearing of the case President’s Counsel K.V. Thavarasha with Tharmaja Tharmaraja defended the accused.

The accused was indicted by the Attorney General for retaining 23 grams of high impact explosives and 35 live bullets in his custody during 21 September 2007 at Borella.

He was indicted under the Emergency Regulation Act.
