The Great Pet Debate
To celebrate the release of the hotly-anticipated sequel, The Secret Life of Pets 2 (hitting cinemas June 20) is calling on you to join THE GREAT PET DEBATE which sees lead characters Max and Chloe appeal for your votes depending on whether you’re feline obsessed OR canine crazy. Because all pets deserve a fair go – with every vote, $1 will be donated to Petrescue.* If you want to make AUSTRALIA PURRRR AGAIN, support Chloe and VOTE CAT… but if it’s IN DOGS YOU TRUST then Max barks you to VOTE DOG.
It's safe to say that there are plenty of dog lovers in this country and given pet pooches are loyal, referred to as 'man's best friend' and often show considerable bravery, it's not hard to see why.but it you're still on the fence about which way to vote, here are 10 reasons why Australia could vote dog in the Great Debate.
Celebrity dog owners who look like their pets
It' s often said that dog owners can look like their animals and there's no denying that some of our most famous celebrities look just like pet pooches and best friends. Take Liam Hemsworth and his rescue dog Tani for instance – the Aussie actor has his dog's expression down pat. Both are equally gorgeous.
They're great big brothers and sisters
Most dogs adapt well to new additions to the family and go on to become fantastic big brothers and sisters. In The Secret Life of Pets 2 Jack Russell terrier Max is introduced to his human brother Liam and quickly becomes an overprotective sibling.
He's not alone. Look at this good boy very excited for the arrival of his future sister! This is Ted the cavalier king and he can't wait for his mum Tahlia Giumelli and dad Tom Burgess to welcome the new addition to the family later this year.
Dog shaming at its finest
Whether they've been tearing up the house, chewing things they shouldn't or just generally misbehaving, cheeky canines are often up to no good. Yet it only takes one look with those adorable puppy dog eyes and all is magically forgiven. In The Secret Life of Pets 2 the dogs are seen enjoying a spa in the dishwasher and using the food mixer as a massage tool. Let's face it - what is funnier than a little spot of dog shaming when your pet pup has been a little naughty?
They can imitate other pets
Dogs have a funny way of transforming into many things. They can be bears, they can morph into rugs, they can act as blankets - they can even imitate other pets. In The Secret Life of Pets 2, Gidget tries her hand at becoming a cat and she's not the only dog. Jennifer Hawkins uploaded this snap of her staffy with the caption: 'I swear Milly thinks she's a cat'.
The outfit possibilities are endless
One benefit of having an adorable pet pooch is that you can dress them up to match whatever outfit you're wearing. Take Where's Pierre here - he's part time sausage dog, full time surf doggy lifesaver. Think a cat could say the same?
They're great fancy dress partners
Whether you're celebrating something special or just messing around with a new look at home, pups can be incredibly amenable with copying your look. Take Hugo and his owner's matching optical look. Like mother, like son hey?
In Secret Life Of Pets 2 Snowball the bunny is often seen dressing up in superhero garb, but there's no denying that doggy dress ups are the best.
They just love kids
While cats are known for their sass and can't necessarily be trusted around children most pet pooches are incredibly patient when it comes to playtime with kids. Take Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky's super placid dog. It doesn't seem to mind when one of the kids decides to perform a dental inspection.
They make best friends with everyone and anyone
No matter what their size or shape, dogs have a habit of befriending anything and everyone. You'd think small pooches could be overwhelmed by a bigger dog not so. Whether you're a dog lover or not they'll try and make friends - with hilarious consequences.
They're the bravest of animals
Dogs aren't just great pets they're also extremely brave. Whether they're guide dogs for the blind, comfort dogs specially trained to help their owners or they are part of the paw patrol arm of the police, pooches are definitely braver than cats. Take Explosive Detection Dog Wally, pictured below. He recently retired from the NSW Police force after more than eight years of service. According to the force's Instagram: 'EDD Wally was a friendly, placid dog, yet full of energy and always wanting to please. During his career, he and his handlers completed many clearances, crime scene searches, bomb threat and search for firearm jobs. Happy retirement Wally. Thank you for your service.'
Just in case you're worried that there isn't a new pup on the block the NSW police force also keep their page updated with images of new recruits.
Meet Trainee Police Dog Zoom who they say 'is still growing into his ears but he seems too happy to care'. What a good boy!
They're dogfluencers
Forget fashion and beauty influencers dogfluencers are where it's at. Whether they are regularly featured on the socials of their famous owners (like Oreo the Pomeranian who belongs to Roxy Jacenko and Pixie Curtis) or they are an insta-star in their own right, plenty of pups are taking social media by storm.
Favourites include Where's Pierre, a Bronte-based miniature dachshund, and Hugo The Newfie, a 70kg Newfoundland pooch based in Melbourne.
