SEWAGE SYSTEM AT MINUWANGODA BASE HOSPITAL NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION
The sewage system of the Minuwangoda Base Hospital is in a very bad state, due to neglect and lack of proper maintenance. The over flowing sewage from the system now flows into the storm water drains in the Minuwangoda town. Thus the entire area has become nauseating and poses a severe health hazard.
This sewage system constructed in 2010 by the Western Provincial Chief Engineers office has now become defective. The hospital medical staff and the patients undergo severe discomfort due to this. The sewage that had found its way to the Minuwangoda town has now started flowing to the drains along the Nittambuwaminuwangoda Airport Road. The commuters and the business community of the town too are seriously affected by the foul smell.
Minuwangoda is now congested with several garment factories nearby. Due to the movement of a large number of employees working in them and the hundreds of travellers to the airport, the authorities should have taken these matters into serious consideration and attended to the maintenance in a timely manner.
The District Medical Health office had been informed about this breakdown several times earlier, but it is apparent that no action had been taken up to now. To make matters

worse, the emergency generator of the hospital is not functioning. The maintenance company had declined to attend to the repairs as it has not been paid previously.
Though these matters had been directed to the attention of the health authorities in Gampaha and other sub offices in Minuwangoda, they have fallen on deaf ears.
The Chief Medical Officer of Health at the Minuwangoda Base Hospital Dr. Sisira Wijesundera also confirmed that these issues had been referred to the Gampaha District Director of Health Services in writing on several occasions. However, no fruitful action has been taken to rectify the issues.
