Arrest warrant issued on absconding IP

Panadura High Court Judge Damith Thotawatta issued an arrest warrant on IP Lalith Aruna Shantha Jayalath of the Panadura Walana Central Striking Police Force who had been evading court in connection with a case against him pending in Panadura High Court. He had been out on bail and another arrest warrant was issued on the surety for his bail bond.

The suspect police officer stands indicted with torturing and inflicting inhuman treatments on Romesh P. Cooray who had been taken into custody in connection with a robbery on July 5, 2003.

When the case was called in the High Court, State Counsel Priyani Abyewardene told court that the accused and the person who stood surety for him were both absent from court.the case was postponed for May 18 thereafter.
