GOVT TO IMPLEMENT WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION PROJECT IN SEVEN DISTRICTS
The project costing Rs.26.5 billion and funded by the central government and the United Nations will be based in the Sabaragamuwa Province
The government has taken steps to implement a water supply and sanitation project covering seven districts. The project costing Rs.26.5 billion and funded by the central government and the United Nations will be based in the Sabaragamuwa Province. A progress review meeting in this regard was held on Wednesday (8) at the Provincial Council Secretariat under the chairmanship of Governor Dhamma Dissanayake. The officials pointed out that the project initiated in 2015 was now being implemented in Kegalle, Ratnapura, Badulla, Moneragala, Nuwara Eliya, Mulaitivu and Kilinochchi districts.
They said the project implemented under the supervision of the Water Supply and Drainage Board, and Town Planning, would be completed by 2020 and that it would include water supply
schemes, sewerage systems, urban and rural sanitary facilities and community service centres.
The governor said two water supply schemes for Sabaragamuwa University and Galigamuwa in the Kegalle district would be implemented. He pointed out that the Sabaragamuwa University had been facing a severe shortage of drinking water since its very inception.
The governor met the representatives of the community water supply organizations and explained on the feasibility of developing the community water supply schemes under the project.
Several senior officials including Chief Secretary Sriyani Padmalatha, Assistant Commissioner Local Government, Sabaragamuwa Province Nishantha Saman Kumara and Senior Land Officer R.P. Priyantha Kumara were present at the occasion.
