Leaders should be honest
How can our elected representatives tell the people of Sri Lanka, to be united, when they are not a sign of unity? How can they ask people to be more concerned and care for each other when most of them do not know how to exchange their ideas and opinions but often demonstrate their confrontational and aggressive behaviour?
How can they ask Sri Lankans to be truthful and not spread fake news through social media, when some of them are not honest and truthful when they articulate their views and opinions? Honesty, truthfulness and integrity of life do not seem to flow like a stream in their lives.
Our representatives seem to articulate more of their personal or group agenda rather than the desirable and viable objectives for the country. Good leaders need to know when to be achievement-oriented and when to accommodate compromise or withdraw from leadership roles. They also need to know that conflicts can be constructive or destructive.
Conflicts can be resolved amicably, while reconciliation demands genuine human relationships.
A trustworthy leader needs to be equipped with these two types of leadership.
They should be persons qualified to identify, name and claim the causes of social and racial/religious conflicts and then either tame the forces if they are aggressive or heal the wounds already inflicted.
We need leaders whose good actions back up their words and whose words are congruent with their actions.
Our politicians cannot offer what
Sri Lanka really needs right now if they continued to be more committed to the achievement of their personal or group objectives.
So, time is ripe now for Sri Lankans, who are concerned about inclusion, equality and flourishing of life of all the Sri Lankans and the good name of Sri Lanka, to name the persons of quality who can bring about the desired changes.
