SO PEOPLE TAKING LAW INTO THEIR HANDS

Govt. not doing its duty

- BY AJITH SIRIWARDANA

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said yesterday that some people were attempting to take the law into their own hands because the government had failed to punish the culprits and stressed the need to arrest the wrongdoers irrespective of who they were or whatever their status might be.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a news conference that the government should provide true information to the people and pointed out that you could not prevent the spread of fake news just by banning social media websites. “The government did not properly implement the law. What they should have done was to impose the law against the culprits irrespective of their race, religion or caste. This is why some people are attempting to take the law into their own hands,” he said.

Mr. Silva said there were some people who were promoting these racial clashes for their political survival and to show the world that there was anarchy in the country.

“Some politicians are spreading fake news for political reasons. Some extremists are also spreading fake news to provoke the people.the government should provide factual information to the people so that they will know about the real situation in the country,” he said. Mr. Silva said the people should not take the law into their hands for whatever reason and that was no way that such acts could be justified. “Our security forces carried out their duty effeciently. But our political authority failed in their task. The government should reveal who were arrested, who were released, the items taken into custody and whether security has been ensured in the country,” he said.
