The Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter,ven. warakagoda Sri Gnanaratha­na Thera said that the country could be saved from the present disastrous situation only through the concerted effort of President Maithripal­a Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesi­nghe.

In a statement to the media he drew the attention of the government to the prevailing situation and said that the country was facing a state of anarchy for want of a leader and pointed out that the Mahasangha had warned of the impending danger, but it fell on the deaf ears of the relevant government authoritie­s.

“It is a clear indication that an unpreceden­ted collapse of peace and harmony is brewing in the country.the Mahasangha and the scholars in the country had at times cautioned the government of the imminent danger,but to no avail.at present a curfew is in force in several areas and if this crisis was allowed to go on unchecked, the country would end up in ruins. It is the responsibi­lity of the government at this crucial juncture to pay particular attention to it and to take right decisions to resolve this serious issue.the people are of opinion that they have been left without protection for want of a leader. Speculatio­ns are rife that the ongoing crisis would lead to massive genocide.with this in view it is the duty of the President and the Prime Minister to join hands and provide a visionary leadership to the county to resolve the issue,” the Mahanayake Thera said. The Anunayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadass­i Thera, Deputy Lekakadika­ri Narampanaw­e Ananda Thera, a Senior Member of the Karaka Sangha Sabha and the Chief Incumbent of Mahiyangan­a Raja Maha Vihara theven. Urulewatte Dhammarakk­itha Thera were present on the occasion.
