NUWARA ELIYA NOW A GHOST TOWN
Nuwara Eliya, which is considered as one of the main tourist destinations in the country, has been deserted by tourists due to the prevailing crisis in the country.
Owners of hotels, restaurants and traders pointed out that the economy in the area had collapsed and thousands of families had lost their livelihood. The managers of several tourist hotels said that foreign
tourists had cancelled the bookings, while local tourists were not visiting the area in fear of any possible danger to their lives and the curfew.
The manager of a popular tourist hotel with 49 rooms said only one room had been reserved by a group that visited Nuwara Eliya yesterday and that all other rooms were vacant. He said the tourists who had reserved 12 rooms, had cancelled the reservations. He said Nuwara Eliya was now a ghost town deserted by tourists.
